The shortest lactation period for a mammal is only 3-5 days by the hooded seal (Cystophora cristata) between mid-March and early April when their pups are born. Hooded seals breed on old heavy ice flows and when born their pups weigh approximately 20 kg (44 lb) and measure 1.05 m (3.44 ft).
