The oldest monarch ever was Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II (1907–15 November 2016), the 13th Asantehemaa (Queen Mother) of the Ashanti kingdom in Ghana, who lived to be at least 109 years old. She was mother of the current Asantehene (Ashanti King), Osei Tutu II (b. Nana Barima Kwaku Duah), the youngest son of her five children.
In Ashanti culture, the Asantehemaa is almost as important as the Asantehene, serving as the monarch's closest advisor and being responsible for selecting the male member of the line to inherit the kingship. The Queen Mother, of the Oyoko Clan, descended from a line dating back to 1695. She was enstooled on 2 June 1976 and held the position for 39 years until her death. Thousands of mourners paid their respects as she lay in state for four days. A roundabout in Kumasi is now named after her.
The oldest known member of the British royal family was Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (UK, b. Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott, 25 December 1901), who achieved the record at the age of 101 years 269 days on 20 September 2003. She died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 102 years 309 days on 29 October 2004 at Kensington Palace, London, UK.
Another centenarian royal was Princess Leonilla of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn (Prussia, 9 May 1816-1 Feb 1918), who had a lifespan of 101 years 268 days.
