At the conclusion of the 2013 Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament on 26 May 2013, Chris Gayle (Jamaica) had scored a total of 180 maximums in his five-season IPL career (2009–13). Gayle's impressive haul of sixes was scored for the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 58 innings. In the 2013 IPL tournament alone, Gayle smashed 51 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore, scored 708 runs and averaged 59 runs in 16 innings. The 2013 tournament was also the scene of his record-shattering 175 not out on 23 April 2013 - the most runs scored by a player in a Twenty20 match (male) (record ID 67886) and the fastest Twenty20 hundred (male) (record ID 72445).

As of 26 May 2013, Gayle's average score in the IPL was 52.33 runs per innings and his strike rate (the average number of runs scored for every 100 balls faced) stood at 160.20 runs.

Gayle has scored 65 more sixes than anyone else in the history of the IPL (see below).
