On 18 February 2023, England captain Ben Stokes hit the 108th and 109th sixes of his Test career during the First Test at the Bay Oval in New Zealand. He has since gone on to extend his tally of sixes to 124 in 175 innings, most recently clearing the boundary rope during a crucial innings of 42 in the series-levelling Fifth Ashes Test at The Oval in London, UK, on 29 July 2023.

This bettered the record of his head coach and “Bazball” mentor Brendon McCullum, who notched up 107 sixes in the 176 innings he played in the Test arena in 2004–16.

Stokes pinched McCullum’s sixes record at the Bay Oval batting at a lowly No.8, after an untimely toilet break, coupled with Stuart Broad’s first deployment as England’s “nighthawk” at No.4, had relegated him down the order, two places lower than his first-innings appearance at No.6. England’s New Zealand-born “Bazball” buddies are clear of Australia’s Adam Gilchrist (100), the only other man to reach 100 sixes in a Test career.

Tim Southee (83), Angelo Mathews (82) and Rohit Sharma (77) are the next currently active (as of 2023) Test players with the most sixes to their name.

Stokes also had 716 Test fours on his CV as of 3 November 2023, which ranked him 63rd on a list topped by Sachin Tendulkar (2,058 fours in 329 innings).
