The 1,292 runs scored by India’s Virat Kohli in 33 innings at the T20 World Cup between 2012 and 2024 are the most in the tournament’s history. When Kohli and teammate/opening batter partner Rohit Sharma retired from T20 Internationals after the latter had captained India to T20 World Cup glory against South Africa in Bridgetown, Barbados, on 29 June 2024, they did so as the competition’s two leading run-scorers; in 44 innings between 2007 and 2024, Sharma tallied 1,220 runs at the T20 World Cup.

Kohli bowed out of the T20 World Cup with an average of 58.72 runs per innings – a vastly superior average to any of the tournament’s all-time top 20 leading run-getters. Compatriot Suryakumar Yadav’s average of 41.25 in 22 innings since making his debut in 2021 – including runs scored in the ongoing 2026 tournament co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, as of 23 February – is the only other player in this select group with an average above 40.

Kohli’s other records at the T20 World Cup include the most runs in a single edition (319 in Bangladesh in 2014) and the most fifties (15).
