On 27 July 2015, researchers at Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, fired the Laser for Fast Ignition Experiments (LFEX) for one trillionth of a second at a power of 2 petawatts.
The LFEX is 100 m in length. Because the firing of the laser was so short, the energy in the beam itself was only enough to run a microwave oven for around two seconds.
The team at Osaka is eventually planning on constructing a 10-petawatt laser.
2 petawatts is 2,000,000,000,000,000 watts.
