Federico Fellini (Italy) won four Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film as a director, with La Strada (1954), Nights of Cabiria (1957), 8 ½ (1963) and Amarcord (1973).

If Special Oscars – which were awarded before the category of Best Foreign Language Film was inaugurated – are also considered, however, Fellini shares his record with Vittorio De Sica (Italy). De Sica won special Oscars for directing Shoeshine (1946) and Bicycle Thieves (1938), and Oscars for Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow (1963) and Il giardino dei Finzi Contini (1970).
