The most modern Summer Olympic Games hosted by a city is three, by London, UK, in 1908, 1948 and 2012.
Athens hosted the Summer Olympics in 1896, 1906 and 2004 but the 1906 Games (known as the 1906 Intercalated Games) are no longer recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Therefore, officially, London is the only city to host the Games three times.
1908 - the fourth modern Olympic Games on the recognized four-year cycle (following the downgrading of Athens 1906). The first Olympic Games were staged in 1896.
1948 - known as the “Austerity Games” following World War II; the first Summer Olympics since Berlin 1936.
London is only the fourth capital city to host the Summer Olympics on more than one occasion - Paris, France (1900 & 1924), Stockholm, Sweden (1912 & 1956 - equestrian events only) and Athens, Greece (1896 & 2004) share this honour. Los Angeles also hosted the Summer Olympics twice, in 1932 and 1984, but is not, of course, a capital city.
