The widely reported cost of staging the 2014 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia, is US$50 billion (£30.06 billion) when taking into account all sports-related costs and the infrastructure built especially for the games taking place on 7–23 February 2014.
Many have put the high cost down to the lack of pre-existing infraestructure in the Russian resort town; in total 85% of the infrastructure had to be built from scratch. The final costs are said to be as much as five times over the original budget. The Sochi Olympics cost more than the previous 21 Winter Olympics combined.
