Welsh flanker Sam Warburton was selected as captain for the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2017 – his second occasion, following the 2013 tour of Australia. He equalled the feat of England’s Martin Johnson, who was captain for the 1997 tour of South Africa and the 2001 tour of Australia. Although Warburton missed the first test against New Zealand, he returned to lead the Lions to a 1–1 series tie, with the deciding test drawn 15–15 on 8 July 2017.
