The most men’s basketball Olympic gold medals (team) is 17, achieved by the USA between 1936 and 2024.
The USA won the first seven Olympic titles contested between 1936 and 1968, before their 63-game winning streak came to an end with a controversial 51–50 loss to the USSR at the final of the 1972 Olympics.
Team USA won further titles in 1976, 1984, 1992 – with a star-studded roster known as the “Dream Team”, as a rule change allowed active professional NBA players to take part for the first time – 1996, 2000, 2008, 2012, 2016, the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics and also in 2024.
