Gerhard Moolman (South Africa) covered a distance of 6,152 km (3,822 miles) on a surfski between Hout Bay, South Africa, and Lamu, Kenya, from 20 April to 23 October 2002. The expedition was called The Far Blue and served to raise funds for, and awareness of, AIDS among children in Africa. A surfski is similar to a kayak, except that the paddler sits atop the vessel rather than inside it. There are shallow depressions in the deck for the paddler's bottom and feet. The latter also hook under straps for grip.
