The longest marathon playing pinball is 48 hours, and was achieved by Wayne Tedder (Canada) in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, on 21 October 2021.
Pinball has been a lifelong passion for Wayne. From the arcades and bowling alleys of his youth, to the machines in his home collection, to the Friday night pinball league he plays in, he's always been comfortable playing pinball for hours at a time.
Wayne attempted the record out of curiosity, he explains "On a whim one evening while sitting in my den, I decided to look up on the GWR website what the world record was for marathon pinball playing. In seeing the record was 30 hours and 10 minutes, I saw that as a difficult, but achievable goal".
The only difficulty that he experienced on the day came from his own nerves. He recalls his emotions "What if we had a glitch with the video recording equipment? What if one (or more) of the scheduled witnesses couldn’t be on hand at their scheduled time? Fortunately, all the witnesses showed up as scheduled and while we did experience a minor technical issue, it didn’t affect the Twitch stream or the recording of the event. Having a professional video guy at the controls really saved the day".
When asked what it would mean to Wayne to be a GWR title holder, he expresses "First of all, there would be the tremendous pride of being an official Guinness World Records title holder."
"I’ve also been giving thought to something else that would tie into me being a GWR title holder. A thought that was born from an unforeseen by-product of my 48-hour event. During the event, many members of the public came by, and many on hand were families. The venue that hosted my event had other pinball machines set up. After watching me play for a while and wishing me continued luck on my marathon event, many of those people enjoyed a game or two of pinball on one of the other machines. While I couldn’t turn away from the pinball machine I was playing, I could hear the excitement and laughter of families enjoying a few games of pinball together. I loved hearing that!"
"I feel pinball is a wonderful game for families to enjoy together. It’s a game where the reflexes of the younger players will prevail. Yet in the very next game, experience will tip the scales in favour of Mom and Dad."
"So, as a valid Guinness World Records title holder, I’d love to volunteer my time at various pinball events in my area and help introduce families and groups of friends to the joy and thrill of pinball."
