Dirk Gion and Stefan Simmerer (both Germany) travelled 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) departing from Albany, Western Australia, on 26 January 2011 and arriving in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 18 days later. Their car, Wind Explorer, weighed just 220 kg (485 lb) and was powered by the wind. A wind turbine charged a lithium-ion battery pack to provide propulsion and, when the wind was strong enough, a kite resembling a parasail was used to harness the power of the wind directly.

With the exception of around $15 worth of electricity when the wind was insufficient, the entire journey was powered by wind.
