On 10 August 2010, the UK Ministry of Defence accepted the newest type of landing craft for a series of evaluation trials at the Royal Marines’ facility at Instow, Devon, UK. Known as the Partial Air Cushion Supported Catamaran (PACSCAT), it is an innovative solution to modern requirements for a fast and functional landing craft. It is a high speed all aluminium vessel, 30 metres long and with a 7.7metre beam. It designed to carry a vehicle payload of 55 tonnes with a fully loaded weigh of approximately 175 tonnes. Twin water jets driven by diesel engines provide propulsion.
