The largest tropical cyclone was named Typhoon Tip, it had a diameter of around 2,220 km (1,380 miles) when it was studied by the US Air Force in the Pacific Ocean, on 12 October 1979.

During this period Tip’s gale force winds covered an area of around 3.8 million sq km. Typhoon Tip was heavily studied by the US Air Force, who flew some 60 research missions into the cyclone.
