The United States Navy currently has over 4,000 aircraft in service, the greatest number of any world navy. It operates around 25 different types of fixed-wing aircraft, including carrier-based F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Hornet fighters, and various reconnaissance, transport, anti-submarine and airborne command post aircraft. It also operates six different helicopters and the unique new V-22 Osprey tilt rotor aircraft.
By comparison, the total aircraft number of aircraft operated by the UK's Royal Air Force is only around 1,100 (including those in storage).
