The area of the world regarded as having the greatest diversity and endemism of plants per unit area is the small island of Juan Fernández in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Chile, which has a total surface area of 100 km² (39 square miles). In this small area scientists have so far identified 209 species of vascular plants, 126 of which are endemic, an endemic plant family (Lactoridaceae), a primitive dicotyledon and 12 fully endemic plant genera.
