When the Tambora volcano in Sumbawa, Indonesia (then Dutch East Indies), erupted from 5 to 10 April 1815, at least 71,000 people were killed. Estimates of the total number of casualties are necessarily vague, and some sources put the total at nearer 121,000.
Many deaths were not the result of the eruption itself but of the associated tsunami.
