According to the World Meteorological Organization, the heaviest hailstones on record weighed up to 1.02 kg (2 lb 3.9 oz) and are reported to have killed 92 people in the Gopalganj area of Bangladesh on 14 April 1986.
The heaviest hailstone to have been recorded in the Western Hemisphere, meanwhile, fell at approximately 23:00 UTC on 23 July 2010 in Vivian, South Dakota, USA; it weighed 0.88 kg (1 lb 15 oz), and had a diameter of 8 in (20.32 cm) and a circumference of 1 ft 6.2 in (47.3 cm). This exceeded the previous US hail records for both weight (1 lb 10.7 oz/0.76 kg: 3 September 1970 in Coffeyville, Kansas) and diameter (7 in/17.78 cm: 22 June 2003 in Aurora, Nebraska).
