The Turbinia was designed by the Hon. Sir Charles Parsons (1854-1931) and built in 1894 at Wallsend-on-Tyne, Tyne & Wear. She was 30m 100ft long, had a displacement 45.2tonnes and was powered by three steam turbines totalling about 2000 shaft horsepower (shp). First publicly demonstrated in 1897, when a speed of 34.5knots 64km/h was achieved, the ship is now preserved at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
