The first tank was No. 1 Lincoln, built by William Foster Co. Ltd of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, UK, and modified to become Little Willie. It first ran on 6 September 1915. Tanks first saw action with the Heavy Section, Machine Gun Corps, later the Tank Corps, at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, France, on 15 September 1916. The Mark I "Male" tank, armed with a pair of 6-pounder guns and four machine guns, weighed 28.4 tonnes (62,611 lb) and was powered by a 105-hp (78-kW) motor, giving a maximum road speed of 4.8–6.4 km/h (3–4 mph).
