The first privately-funded manned space flight was achieved on 21 June 2004. SpaceShipOne reached an altitude of 100,124 m (328,492 ft), piloted by Mike Melvill (South Africa), built and operated by Scaled Composites, Mojave, California, and funded by Paul G Allen (USA). The space craft took off from and landed at Mojave Airport.
