Piracy is nowadays defined as the act of attempting to board a ship with intent to commit theft or any other crime with the apparent intention to use force to achieve that end. Piracy has probably existed as long as man has sailed the oceans, but the first recorded description comes from Egyptian records of the 14th century BCE, when Lukkan pirates from Turkey’s Mediterranean coast raided Cyprus, in the eastern Mediterranean.
