The first Olympic champion (female) is Hélène de Pourtalès (Switzerland, b. Helen Barbey, USA), who was a member of the winning team in the 1–2 Ton sailing event, which took place in Meulan-en-Yvelines, France, on 22 May 1900.
The 1900 Olympics were the first where women were allowed to compete. Hélène de Pourtalès won gold sailing with her husband and nephew aboard the Lérina in Race One of the 1–2 Ton class sailing event. The first women’s champion in an individual event was Charlotte Cooper (UK), who won the women’s singles tennis final on 11 July 1900.
