The first person to go into space while not employed by a government was Charles Walker (USA), who flew as a Payload Specialist for the American aerospace and defence company McDonnell Douglas, onboard the STS-41-D mission of the space shuttle Discovery from 30 August to 5 December 1984. Walker flew on two later shuttle missions, also paid for by McDonnell Douglas: STS-51-D (Discovery), 12–19 April 1985 and STS-61-B (Atlantis), 26 November to 3 December 1986.
