The first magnetically levitated (maglev) train to enter public service ran for 600 m (1,970 ft) between Birmingham International Airport and the nearby Birmingham International Interchange in West Midlands, UK, from 1984 to 1995. It was taken out of service due to the high cost of replacing worn parts and replaced with a conventional cable-drawn shuttle system.
