The earliest vascular land plant is Cooksonia, which appeared approximately 425 million years ago during the mid-Silurian Period. Only a few cm tall, these simple plants lacked leaves, flowers, and roots, possessing a stalk that branched a few times, with each branch terminating in a spore-bearing structure known as a sporangium.
