In 1971 a team of IBM engineers led by Alan Shugart (USA) invented the floppy disk. The 20.32-cm2 (8-in2) plastic disk was nicknamed floppy because of its flexibility.
Shugart went on to refine the design for Wang Computers, producing a 13.335-cm (5 1 /4 -in) flexible disk and disk drive in 1976. In 1981 Sony were the first to introduce the 8.89-cm 2 (3 1 /2 -in 2 ) drives and diskettes which are standard in modern personal computer systems.
