Alan Smithee is the pseudonym used by movie directors who no longer wish to be associated with a film. The first "Alan Smithee" film, where the custom originated, was Death of a Gunslinger (USA, 1969), when director Bob Totten (USA) walked off set, followed closely by his replacement, Don Siegel (USA). The two men lodged a complaint with the Directors Guild of America, whose solution was to credit the movie to "Alan Smithee". Since then, other unhappy directors have adopted the name, including David Lynch and William Friedkin (both USA).
