In January 2000, Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard headed an international team of 18 surgeons and 32 support staff, who transplanted two arms just below the elbow onto a 33 year-old French explosives worker, who lost his arms in an accident four years previously.when a rocket malfunctioned. The procedure took 17 hours to complete and was performed at the Edouard-Herriot Hospital in Lyon, France.
Professor Dubernard rose to prominence in 1998, when he successfully transplanted a hand onto road accident victim Clint Hallam.
