The Community Memory project, established in Berkeley, California, USA in 1973, used a teletype terminal in a record shop, connected to an SDS 940 computer in San Francisco. It allowed visitors to the shop to enter and view messages left by others. It was the first public computerised bulletin board system (BBS).
