The earliest known biographical reference work was Debrett's Peerage, first published in 1769 under the title The New Peerage. When John Debrett (UK) took over editorship of the work in 1802 he gave his name to the work. The earliest autobiographical reference work is Who's Who, published in 1849 (see broken record below).
