On 29 October 1991, the Galileo spacecraft, on its way to Jupiter, made a flyby of the asteroid 951 Gaspra, "brushing" past at a distance of 1,600 km (994 miles) and at a relative speed of about 8 km/s (18,000 mi/h).
The probe snapped 57 photographs of the asteroid, documenting around 80% of the surface.
