Makalu (8,485 m; 27,837 ft) was first climbed on 15 May 1955, when the summit was reached by Jean Couzy and Lionel Terray (both France). Makalu is one of the 8,000ers, the 14 mountains on Earth that rise to more than 8,000 m (26,247 ft) above sea level. They are all located in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges in Asia.
