Lhotse (8,516 m; 27,939 ft) was first climbed on 18 May 1956, when the summit was reached by Fritz Luchsinger and Ernst Reiss (both Switzerland). Lhotse is one of the 8,000ers, the 14 mountains on Earth that rise to more than 8,000 m (26,247 ft) above sea level. They are all located in the Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges in Asia.
