Russia's Andrew Mariev and Vadim Popovich completed the first successful ascent of the notoriously vicious west face of K2. The expedition – led by Viktor Kozlov (Russia) – reached the 8,500-m-high (28,251-ft) peak on 21 August 2007, after a gruelling 10-week climb. Incredibly, none of the team used oxygen for the climb.
