Owing to the success of "Saturday Night" in continental Europe, where it was released as far back as 1992, an import version of the single sold enough copies to chart in the UK in the five weeks before its official No.1 debut. The import peaked at No.79.

Significantly, "Saturday Night" knocked Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" off the top spot after 15 consecutive weeks at No.1. The Scottish band reportedly instructed the physical single to be removed from sale after its 15th week at the top, just a week shy of Bryan Adams' UK record of 16 consecutive weeks with "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You", allowing Whigfield what should have been an unchallenged bid for No.1. In fact, sales for "Love Is All Around" increased to about 104,000 in the week "Saturday Night" (150,000) was released, with fans of Marti Pellow's Wet Wet Wet keen to snap up existing copies of the single before it disappeared.
