The first aerial bombardment ever was attempted in 1849 when Austrians launched 200 pilot-less hot-air balloons to drop timed-release bombs over enemy defences in Venice, Italy. Due to unpredictable winds, however, there were few casualties.
Please note: Italy, at that time, was not unified - rather it was a collection of smaller states.
