The earliest tennis game to use 3D graphics was the 1999 arcade version of Virtua Tennis. Virtua Tennis was able to provide a far more realistic, natural and enjoyable simulation of tennis than its competitors, thanks to the realism of the player movements and the use of complicated ball physics.
