In 1988, Steffi Graf (Germany) became the first tennis player to achieve a “Golden Slam” by winning the four majors – Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, US Open – and Olympic gold in the same year. Graf set herself up for an attempt at an unprecedented “Golden Slam” with a three-set victory over Gabriela Sabatini in the US Open singles final on 11 September, before completing the set by defeating the same opponent in the singles final at the Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, on 1 October.

Graf stood alone as the only tennis player – male or female – to achieve a “Golden Slam” for almost 33 years. Then, on the final day of the US Open on 12 September 2021, just days after winning Paralympic gold in Tokyo, Japan, Diede de Groot (wheelchair singles) and Dylan Alcott (quad singles) completed their own “Golden Slams” as winning finalists at Flushing Meadows in New York.
