The fastest long course 200 m freestyle by a male swimmer is 1 minute 42 seconds, by Paul Biedermann (Germany) at the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy, on 28 July 2009. He set the record just two days after swimming the fastest-ever 400 m freestyle at the same championships.
A total of 43 world records were set at the 2009 FINA World Championships, largely due to the extensive use of hi-tech non-textile swimsuits, which were subsequently banned by FINA in January 2010.
