The fastest run one mile by a female athlete is 4 minutes 12.33 seconds, achieved by Sifan Hassan (Netherlands, b. Ethiopia) at an IAAF Diamond League meeting at Stade Louis II, Monaco, on 12 July 2019.


Hassan broke Svetlana Masterkova’s record of 4:12.56, which had stood for almost 23 years. It was Hassan’s second world record of 2019, having recorded a time of 14:44 for the 5 kilometres (women-only race) on 17 February.
