Girma broke Daniel Komen’s mark of 7:24.90, which had stood for 25 years, by more than one second. He won a last-lap duel with Mohamed Katir, who also ran inside Komen’s mark. Girma, known as a 3000-m steeplechase specialist, had previously won two world championship medals and one Olympic silver in the event.
