The fastest indoor 200 m run by a female athlete is 21.87 seconds, by Merlene Ottey (Slovenia, b. Jamaica) at the St Yorre International Meeting in Liévin, France, on 13 February 1993. She is the only woman to have run a sub-22 second indoor 200 m.

Sprinter Ottey won a record 9 Olympic medals (three silver and six bronze) for Jamaica before becoming a Slovenian citizen in 2002.
