The fastest 400 m hurdles (male) is 45.94 sec, and was achieved by Karsten Warholm (Norway), at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, in Japan, Tokyo, on 3 August 2021.

Warholm continued his dominance of 400 m hurdles as he picked up from where he left off in July, where he broke the world record in front of a home crowd in Oslo with a time of 46.70 sec. This time, behind closed doors due to COVID restrictions at the Tokyo Olympics, Warholm bettered his own record and finished ahead of rival American Rai Benjamin, whose second-place finish would too have beaten the current world record.
