New Zealand rowers Eric Murray and Hamish Bond smashed the decade-old record for the men's coxless pairs by almost six seconds when they crossed the finish line in a time of 6:08.50 on 28 July 2012 on the first day of competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Murray and Bond, who are unbeaten in the coxless pairs since teaming up in 2009, were competing in the first heat of the first rowing event at London 2012 and their record-breaking time took them through to the semi-finals. The rowing events at London 2012 took place at Eton Dorney (aka Dorney Lake), near Windsor. The previous record of 6:14.27 was set by Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell (both UK) at the World Championships in Seville, Spain, on 21 September 2002.
