He followed the South East Ridge route.
Since 2003, the attempt was challenged by another Sherpa, with that attempt evidence being referred to the Ministry of Culture, Tourism & Civil Aviation in Nepal, who ruled in favour of Lhakpa as having the fastest genuine ascent.
