The farthest run in one hour by a female athlete is 18,930 metres, achieved by Sifan Hassan (Netherlands, b. Ethiopia) on 4 September 2020 at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.
Hassan broke clear from rival Brigid Kosgei with a minute left in the race at the Diamond League exhibition meeting in Brussels. Kosgei was later disqualified for stepping off the track. The Wavelight pace-guidance system was used, with LED lights on the inside edge of the track giving an indication of world-record pace for the athletes. The previous record – 18,517 metres, by Dire Tune – had stood for 12 years.
