The largest videogames convention is Gamescom, an annual industry trade fair and fan event held in Cologne (Köln), Germany. The 2019 edition of the event (the last held before the COVID-19 pandemic), which took place between 20 and 24 August, saw 373,000 people visit the convention, including 31,300 videogames industry professionals representing 1,153 developers and publishers.
Gamescom started in 2006 as an industry-only trade fair, but has gradually grown to incorporate more events and spaces intended for the general public. These include an event area where eSports competitions are held, various talks and presentations, as well as a comic-con style "indie village" where visitors can interact with small development teams and their creations.
The 2020 and 2021 editions of Gamescom were digital-only events due to the travel restrictions that came with the COVID-19 pandemic.
